Engr. David Oni Sunday, a community development advocate and long-standing member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has announced his withdrawal from active politics “with immediate effect and until further notice.”
The announcement was made in a personal statement addressed to his friends, supporters and “the good people of Yagba East and Kogi State,” in which he described the decision as the product of “several weeks of deep meditation, reflection and honest conversations” with himself.
In the statement, Oni Sunday recounted years of loyalty to the APC, saying his involvement in politics had always been driven by a desire for service and community development rather than personal ambition. He said he had supported the party and its candidates over the years with his resources, time and physical presence during elections and other political activities.

He disclosed that he had twice sought to represent Yagba East at the Kogi State House of Assembly, but on both occasions stepped aside at the request of party leadership and stakeholders “in the interest of unity and party cohesion.” He said he did so “without bitterness, resentment or complaint,” maintaining that the party’s interest superseded his personal ambitions.
Explaining his decision to step back, Oni Sunday said the current political environment does not offer the “assurance and clarity” needed to sustain his active participation in partisan politics at this time. He was careful to distance the decision from any personal grievance, stating that it was “not borne out of anger, disappointment or disloyalty to anyone or to our great party.”
Instead, he described the move as a deliberate pause to reassess his life’s direction and explore other ways of contributing to the development of Kogi State.
Oni Sunday expressed appreciation to the APC leadership across Yagba East Local Government Area, Yagba Federal Constituency, Kogi West Senatorial District and Kogi State, as well as to friends, associates and supporters who had stood by him over the years.
He asked for continued understanding, prayers and friendship as he takes this step back, noting that any future decisions regarding his political and public engagements would be communicated “at the appropriate time.” He closed his statement with a prayer for Yagba East, Kogi State and Nigeria.
