Citizen of a polity in a functional democratic setting has a role to play, because the whole ideology and brain behind democracy as a system of government and governance is providing greater benefit to the greater majority who are the citizen. The roles of the citizens lies from making a non-functional government to be more responsive, a confused apparatus of governance to be more focused, putting or suggesting functional ideologies, policy and plans to focussless government etc. These roles in the 21st century can only be achieved either through constructive criticisms, violence and other means getting the attention of any anti-masses government.

Here in Kogi state, it is very clear and glaring that the government has entered into an unholy romance, slept and woke up with the concept of confusion and visionlessness. This unholy democratic union has lead to an unwanted pregnancy which has led to the delivery of democratic babies of fraud, lies, deceptions, mal-administration and idleness in government.
Just imagine, Kogi State has now been turned into a theater of lies and fraud, a theater where lies and propaganda becomes instruments used to play on the intelligence on the people who are expecting sincerity and performance from the government, which is aimed at improving their socio-economic status.
The Yahaya Bello-led government came out via the SSA on Electronic Media and the Director General on Media to the governor that cleared workers will be paid by the end of last month, but as at this moment none of the either cleared or uncleared workers has been paid.
Also, when workers said they were not paid for more a year, the governor’s media aides denied that the government is owing any worker his salary, but thank God that the chief of Staff to the governor came out on national television to tell the whole Nigerian that the government headed by his boss, Yahaya Bello is owing the workers up to 12 months of salaries.
Also, the SSA on education came online that Tertiary institutions in the state will be re-opened in April, but as at the 2nd week of May tertiary institutions in the state are still on strike, with the government claiming that it has met most of the demands of the striking lecturers. While the lecturers on their own part still insist that the government is yet to met their demands.
These series of lies and fraud on the intelligence of the people of the state has made the state to become a laughing stock in the eyes of many Nigerians as they see the state as a theater for experimenting governance and government in a democratic setting.
In addition, another visible democratic virus that has politically infected the current administration in the state is that of role and functions idleness; a situation where the personnel of government who are appointed at various capacities to help propel the mechanism of government have no role or administrative role assigned to them or when the appointees decide to overlook those roles and responsibilities assigned to them in favour of chronic and deadly political sycophancy.
A situation where all government appointee will escort the governor to Abuja to attend a reconciliation meeting of his political party. An unfortunate scenario where the political appointees organize solidarity rallies not to raise awareness on the hunger and poverty in the state but to support and call for the release of one Hon. Toafik Isa, an alleged hired assassin, who was arrested in connection with the attempted murder of Senator Dino Melaye. This is clear pointer that most of these appointees have no clear policy framework or plan, objective or target to achieve goals given to them to achieve, unless that of sycophancy.
These multiple acts of lies, fraud and idleness has resulted into:
– Non-payment of workers salaries
– Lecturers on strike
– Doctors on strike
– Increasing rate of insecurity
– Increasing rate of hunger, poverty and disease
– Increasing rate of s0cial and infrastructural facilities decay etc.
Conclusively, the only option left for a government that is faced with such a dilemma, is for such a government to revisit it approach toward governance and make it more masses-oriented, avoid unnecessary propaganda, lies and fraud and most especially, comprehensively engage it appointees in more productive avenue and ventures in governance rather than sycophancy.
