Traditional rulers in Kogi West Senatorial District have called on politicians to respect one another and promote peaceful coexistence as the ban on electioneering campaigns is expected to be lifted soon.

The appeal was contained in a communique issued at the end of a meeting of the Kogi West Traditional Council of Chiefs held in Lokoja. The communique was read by the Ohimegye Igu of Koton Karfe, HRM Dr Sa’idu Akawu Salihu.

The meeting drew traditional council chairmen from across the senatorial district, while the Maigari of Lokoja was represented by the Olu of Oworo.

Security Concerns, but Commendation for Government Efforts

While expressing concern over lingering security challenges in the district, the monarchs commended the Federal and Kogi State governments for their efforts in tackling the situation.

According to the communique, the traditional rulers appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for what they described as a proactive approach to addressing insecurity in the state.

They specifically pointed to the arrest of suspected arms dealers in parts of Kogi West, including Yagba West, Yagba East and Kabba, describing the operations as evidence that government security measures were yielding positive results.

Call for Peaceful Campaigns

The council reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace and peaceful coexistence among the people of Kogi West as the political season approaches.

“As the campaign commences, we advise politicians to respect one another for the purpose of the peaceful coexistence of our people,” the communique stated.

The traditional rulers urged politicians and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully, cautioning against inflammatory statements or actions capable of creating tension among the people.

They further commended the Federal and Kogi State governments for their continued efforts towards maintaining security and called for sustained collaboration among traditional institutions, government and security agencies.
