Japhet Sheknigimi Samuel, a 400 level student in the Department of Geology, Federal University Lokoja (FUL), has emerged as the North Central winner of the Season of Rahaman 5.0 Essay Competition.
The competition, themed “The Role of Geology in Sustainable Growth and Development of a Nation: A Nigerian Perspective,” drew participants from across the country and highlighted the importance of geoscience in national development.
According to a statement issued by the University’s Directorate of Strategic Communication and Corporate Documentation, Japhet’s winning entry at the regional level earned him the opportunity to represent the North Central zone at the grand finale held on 28 April 2026 at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

At the national stage, where top finalists from different regions competed, Federal University Lokoja secured third place overall and received a cash prize of two hundred and fifty thousand naira.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, representing the South East, clinched first place, while Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, representing the South West, finished second.
FUL Department of Geology described the achievement as a reflection of its growing academic strength and rising profile within the Nigerian geoscience community.
It also commended Japhet for his discipline and intellectual depth, noting that his performance has brought honour to the University and pride to the North Central region.
