It is with profound gratitude to Almighty God that we celebrate the life of an extraordinary man, Dr P. H. O. Amodu, who was called to eternal glory on 15 June 2026.

Born in 1942, years before Nigeria attained independence, Dr Amodu rose from humble beginnings in a remote village in Igalaland to become one of the most distinguished sons of the land. Through hard work, personal sacrifice, determination, and discipline, he achieved remarkable success and became the second medical doctor from Igalaland.

Dr Amodu served as the Commissioner for Health in Kogi State. During his tenure, the state witnessed significant improvements in healthcare delivery. In particular, maternal and infant mortality rates declined considerably. He was a meticulous professional who paid close attention to detail in all matters relating to healthcare administration and service delivery.

He also served as the Chief Medical Director of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja. In that capacity, he replicated the same excellence and commitment that characterised his public service, transforming the hospital into a model institution worthy of emulation by other states. During his tenure, complex medical cases were referred to the hospital from various parts of Nigeria and beyond. His dedication to saving lives and promoting quality healthcare was second to none. He remains a role model whose legacy will continue to inspire generations yet unborn.

I consider it a great privilege to have known and associated with such an exceptional man of impeccable character, remarkable integrity, and outstanding leadership ability. He was not only a leader but also a father, mentor, and source of inspiration to many.

A man of immense wisdom, Dr Amodu combined professional excellence with community advocacy, working tirelessly to promote peaceful coexistence, prosperity, and progress. He demonstrated love, kindness, compassion, and a willingness to help all who crossed his path, both professionally and personally. Fondly known as “Dr Amazing”, he touched countless lives in ways that words cannot adequately express. He often stayed awake until the early hours of the morning attending to the needs of others. Indeed, he was an extraordinary man.

Losing him at a time when our community, state, and nation still greatly needed his wealth of knowledge, experience, and wisdom is both painful and heartbreaking. His passing has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill. It is a monumental loss to me, my family, the Igala Nation, Kogi State, and Nigeria as a whole.

As we mourn the departure of this remarkable man, we also celebrate the extraordinary 83 years with which God blessed him and all those whose lives he touched. Dr Amodu’s footprints are permanently woven into the fabric of our community, our state, and our nation. His enduring legacy will continue to inspire us for generations to come.

Rest on, Dr Amodu.

We thank you for your lifetime of dedicated service, your boundless love, and the indelible mark you left upon our hearts and within our community.

Adieu.
