The ongoing public brouhaha surrounding the nightclub statement credited to Senator Akpabio concerning the Kogi Central shining star, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is a setback on democratic advancement.

Recall that Senator Akpabio recently hushed Senator Natasha during a plenary session and subsequently called her attention to the rule of the house that no senator can access the microphone without permission. She humbly tendered an apology by pleading for pardon, but the Senate President still went ahead to say that the lawmaking room was not a nightclub.

This statement has generated a lot of concerns both to the female folds and some keen watchers of our democracy.

Words hold power, particularly when spoken by those in positions of authority. Leaders must always be mindful of their words as they can influence public opinion, shape policies, and affect the morale of the people. Senator Akpabio’s statements should reflect wisdom, respect, and a commitment to the values of democracy

As Nigeria continues to develop its democratic institutions, it is imperative that respect and decorum are upheld at all levels of governance. Leaders must lead by example, demonstrating the values of respect, integrity, and commitment to public service. This will help in building a more inclusive and respectful political culture.

As a two-time Commissioner for Information in Kogi state and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who hails from Kogi Central, the senatorial district which Senator Natasha represents, it behooves on me to lend my voice devoid of party sentiment.

Women, especially those in leadership roles, should not be subjected to any form of bullying or derogatory remarks, particularly when they are fulfilling their official duties. This kind of treatment can discourage other aspiring women from entering the political arena, thereby perpetuating gender inequality in governance.

Female politicians, like their male counterparts, contribute significantly to the development of the nation. They bring diverse perspectives and solutions to the table, which are crucial for holistic policymaking. Disrespecting them not only undermines their contributions but also sends a negative message to the society about the role and value of women in leadership.

Despite the unfortunate incident, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan should not be discouraged. Her role in the Senate is vital, and her contributions are valuable. I am encouraging her to remain steadfast and continue to perform her duties with diligence and integrity.

Senator Akpabio should have a deep regard for the sanctity of his office and be mindful of his statements, especially during plenary sessions. The Senate President Akpabio holds a position of immense responsibility and influence. As the leader of the legislative arm of government, his words and actions carry weight and have far-reaching implications.

The Senate is a place of serious deliberation and decision-making, and any form of triviality or disrespect can undermine its integrity. Senator Akpabio, therefore, must ensure that his conduct reflects the dignity and seriousness of his position. This will not only maintain the respect of the Senate but also set a positive example for other members and the public.

Senator Akpabio should be guided against creating a pattern of derogatory remarks. Many Nigerians are still displeased with how he handled his case with Senator Ireti Kingibe recently and have not forgotten the infamous “let the poor breathe” statement he made last year. Such comments can erode public trust and confidence in the Senate’s leadership.

Leaders, especially those in high-ranking positions, must be conscious of their language and behavior. Their statements should inspire confidence, unity, and respect. By avoiding derogatory remarks and focusing on constructive dialogue, leaders can foster a more respectful and productive political environment.

Negative remarks from leaders can have far-reaching consequences. They can demoralize those they are directed at and diminish the leader’s credibility.

Furthermore, such statements can create unnecessary distractions from the critical issues that need attention in governance. Leaders should, therefore, strive to use their words to uplift and inspire rather than demean and belittle.

Senator Natasha should also become well-versed with the rules of the House while in plenary sessions. Understanding these rules will not only help her navigate the political landscape more effectively but also ensure that she can address any challenges or criticisms with confidence and competence.

Creating a respectful and supportive environment is essential to encouraging more women to participate in politics. By addressing issues of bullying and derogatory remarks, Nigeria can pave the way for more women to take up leadership roles, thereby enriching its political landscape with diverse perspectives and solutions.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan should remain undeterred, continuing to serve with dedication and integrity. Together, these efforts can foster a more respectful and inclusive political environment in Nigeria.
