Kogi State has emerged champions of the 10th edition of the President Unity Cup U-17 Boys Soccer Championship after a 1-0 win victory over Taraba state under the floodlights at the Kogi Confluence Stadium on Monday.

An effort from a 40-yard free kick spot by captain and midfielder Abbas Ibrahim helped Kogi state edge out the Jalingo boys to grab its first U-17 President Unity trophy.

The hosts failed to secure an opener in the first half with plenty opportunities to rout their opponents.

Three begging chances were individually missed in the first half by the Kogi striking duo of Alhassan Sanusi and Ademola Solomon who both scored three goals each in the tournament.

The second half was not different with Kogi maintaining the overwhelming dominance but couldn’t convert its possession to goal until in the 68th minute when Abbas Ibrahim fired home a long range effort from free kick spot to secure the much-awaited winner.

Kogi should have won with a wider margin but for Taraba State goalkeeper, Ahmed Adams, who made several classy saves to keep them in the encounter despite earlier losing 2-0 to the hosts at the group stages.
