Kogi: Commissioner of Agriculture Assures NVMA of the Government’s Improved Patronage

Kogi State Commissioner of Agriculture, Barr. Kehinde Oloruntoba has reiterated the commitment of Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration to support all viable sectors of the state’s economy through adequate funding and recruitment of commensurate man power.
He said this earlier today during a meeting with members of Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Kogi state chapter in his office.
The leader of the delegation, the Kogi state chairman of the professional body, Dr G.S Ajayi had during his presentation registered the union’s displeasure with the abysmal neglect of Veterinarians in the State by successive past governments. Dr Ajayi was quick to relate this neglect to the upsurge of zoonotic disease conditions being recorded in the State over the past few years. In a bid to improve veterinary services in the state, he appealed to the commissioner help facilitate the construction of a modernized abattoir facility in Lokoja and one in each of the State’s  senatorial districts, building of a well equipped veterinary hospital in Lokoja and clinics across the 21 LGAs of the state.
He equally appealed for the recruitment of more veterinarians into the state work force, the revamping the inter boundary quarantine posts to check live birds marketing and help influence the speedy passage of the ‘veterinary edict bill’ that has been lying in the house of assembly unattended to for years.
The commissioner promised to raise these needs during the next executive meeting which is scheduled for next week and to passionately appeal to the governor for a swift approval considering their relevance to public health and meat hygiene in the state.
“I have been more enlightened by your visit on what a society like ours stand to benefit from standardised veterinary practices hence, we’ll not hesitate to support your members and indeed, Kogi state chapter of NVMA. We hope to meet up with your demands in due course”,  he added.
Members of the delegation took turn to commend the highly rated Commissioner over the unprecedented feat that has been assumed by the Ministry of Agric under his supervision.
