- Political commentator says Nigerians deserve a governing plan, not just opposition rhetoric, ahead of 2027
Political commentator, David Jayeoba has challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to move beyond his persistent criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and present Nigerians with a clear, practical and measurable alternative for governing the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Jayeoba said Atiku, as a former Vice President and experienced political figure, has every right to scrutinise the administration in power, but that Nigerians deserve more than criticism from someone seeking the presidency.
“Nigeria does not need politicians who merely identify problems. Nigerians need leaders who can explain how they intend to solve those problems,” Jayeoba said.
According to Jayeoba, Atiku’s repeated focus on Tinubu’s record risks reducing his political message to opposition politics rather than demonstrating that he is prepared to lead the country. He argued that the central question for Atiku should no longer be whether he can defeat President Tinubu politically, but whether he can convince Nigerians that he possesses a credible strategy for governing Nigeria.
Call for Specifics on Economy, Security and Living Costs
Jayeoba said Atiku should provide specific answers on economic growth, agriculture, industrialisation, employment, energy, security, infrastructure and the cost of living.
“Political ambition is legitimate, but the presidency must never become an end in itself. The presidency is a responsibility, and anyone seeking it must demonstrate the competence, vision and strategy required to carry that responsibility,” he said.
A Contest of Ideas, Not Personal Attacks
He further called for the 2027 political contest to be based on policies and ideas rather than personal attacks and political propaganda.
“President Tinubu should defend his record. Atiku should present his alternative. Other aspirants should do the same. Let Nigerians compare their programmes, competence, experience and vision,” Jayeoba stated.
Jayeoba maintained that Atiku’s experience in Nigerian politics gives him an opportunity to offer a serious alternative, but that such an alternative must be built around a clearly defined national development agenda.
He concluded: “Atiku must stop chasing the shadow of Tinubu and start presenting the Nigeria he intends to build. Nigerians are looking for leadership, not merely ambition.”
