Fed Govt Plans to Build Coal-Powered Station in Kogi State

The Federal Government is to build three coal-powered stations in Kogi state and two other states. These plants when completed will generate 3,000 megawatts.

A statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Media, Mr. Adinuba said the stations would be constructed in Kogi, Enugu, and Gombe States.

The statement quoted the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, as saying this at a conference organised by the Ministry of Information to mark President Goodluck Jonathan’s first 100 days in office.

The minister said that the aim was to diversify electricity generation in the country.
“Not only does Nigeria have huge coal deposits in Kogi, Enugu, Gombe and Benue States, but we also have the world’s cleanest type of coal,” he said.

Nnaji said that the stations would be built by the Federal Government in collaboration with the state governments and the private sector.

According to him, federal government would have about 25 per cent equity stake in the projects, while the states and theprivate sector would own the rest.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports the projects would take about four years to complete.
