Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has reiterated his determination to sanitise the state’s civil service and make it more result-oriented. The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kingsley Fanwo, said the corruption in the civil service had clipped the wheels of development in the state, vowing that his government would address the issue holistically.

Bello in the statement said the civil service was top-loaded with ghost workers whose over-bloated wage bill has been depriving legitimate workers of their wages.
He said: “Our administration is guided by the New Direction agenda to ensure that the change Kogites voted for became manifest in the way we meet the yearning of the people and the way government conducts business.
“To achieve our noble objectives, we need a corrupt-free and efficient civil service to help us drive our change agenda. We cannot afford to fail thousands of Kogi people who defied all odds to choose the All Progressives Congress.
“As a realist, I am aware of the irrefutable fact that we cannot certainly continue this way. It is socially, morally, economically and politically unwise to service 39,000 workers with our total allocations. We need to first ascertain the actual strength of our workforce.
“I wish to also reiterate my pledge to the people of the state that our government will ensure that no legitimate civil servant loses his or her job. My promise to the people is to create jobs. We won’t take away jobs from the people.
“But we remain unwaveringly committed to ensuring that ghost workers do not benefit anymore from our commonwealth. Our strategy is to save funds from a hitherto corrupt payrolls and also improve on our revenue generation in order to build roads, improve on our healthcare structures and empower the people”.
Bello promised to vigorously pursue the entrenchment of an investment conducive environment in the state to create more private sector jobs, said his long term agenda is to make public service less attractive to the youths of the state.
With our rich agricultural land, minerals and tourism potentials, we will turn Kogi to an industrial hub to serve as the economic leader of Nigeria”. The governor, however, called on the people of the State to beware of divisive elements who are exploiting the people with ethnicity, urged them to key into the “detribalize nature of his administration to forge a common front against poverty, ethnic jingoism and deprivation. He also urged Nigerians to continue to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to purge the nation of corruption that has brought the nation to her knees for decades.
