Discerning the Voice of God: How to Know Who Is Speaking

Every Christian must learn to discern the voice of God above the noise of competing voices. Our spiritual maturity is not measured merely by how often we claim to hear God, but by our willingness to test what we hear, understand His Word, and obey His instructions.

But an important question remains: How do we distinguish the voice of God from the deception of the devil and the desires of our own hearts?

The Bible provides a clear starting point in 1 John 4:1:

«“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”»

This instruction is a warning against spiritual gullibility. Not everything that sounds supernatural comes from God. Not every dream is a divine revelation, every inner impression a prophetic instruction, or every powerful experience evidence of God’s presence.

Some people say, “God told me.” Others declare, “The Lord revealed it to me,” or “I heard Him speak to my spirit.” They may be sincere, but sincerity alone does not establish the source or accuracy of a spiritual impression.

The fact that a message sounds spiritual does not automatically make it divine.

God’s voice will never contradict His written Word. The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ, leads believers into truth, and produces fruit consistent with God’s character. Therefore, every impression must be examined in the light of Scripture, godly wisdom, prayer, and sound spiritual counsel.

The devil can deceive, human desires can mislead, and our emotions can influence what we believe we have heard. This is why discernment requires humility. Rather than rushing to announce, “God said,” we must be willing to ask, “Have I tested this? Does it agree with Scripture? What fruit will it produce?”

Remember: Spiritual maturity is not merely hearing a voice; it is discerning its source and responding in obedience to God’s truth.

May the Lord grant us wisdom to recognise His leading, courage to reject deception, and humility to distinguish His will from our own desires.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

Prayer: Father, sharpen my spiritual discernment. Deliver me from deception, self-will, and every voice that leads me away from Your truth. Teach me to recognise Your leading through Your Word and the Holy Spirit, and give me the grace to obey You faithfully, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
