The Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, Kogi State Council, have described the alleged detention of its member on the orders of the Governor, by the Department of State Security Services, for five days without access to his family members, doctor and lawyer as inhuman and a breach to the right of Mr Friday Ogungbemi.
The Chapel, which frowned at the continued incarceration of the publisher without prosecution, described his his ordeal as act of wickedness that is against the norm.
The Chapel called on the government and all its agents to release the publisher unconditionally, failure which it would have no choice but to ask for damages.
While noting that the attempt to gag the press by this detention may not yield the desired results, said only good governance that guarantees freedom of expression in a democratic settings is what will silence negative publicity.
The Chapel lamented that its member has in the last five days been subjected to inhuman treatment, access to his drugs, said the inability of his lawyer to get access to him is unacceptable.
The Chapel commended the National President of the NUJ, Waheed Odusule, for declaring a boycott of government activities by working journalists, also thanked the Ali Atabor led leadership of the state union for standing solidly in the fight against injustice.
