Mr. Lugard Osemwegie, the Zone `H’ Commander of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has charged the personnel to display high level of professionalism during the 2019 general elections.
Osemwegie gave the charge at an event held at Zone `H’ Headquarters on Wednesday in Lokoja, tagged: “Sensitisation Seminar on Election Duties.”
According to we are gathered here today to remind you of your duties during the forthcoming elections; our conduct must meet up with the world best practice.
“As a Civil Defender, you must be alert so as to prevent minor incidents from escalating. You must display high level of professionalism, be neutral and fair to all parties.
“You are not expected to show partisanship or canvass for votes for any party. You must be approachable, display calmness, and ability to respond to matters without exhibiting rudeness.
“No collection of money from any party, no collection of bribe, remember in Civil Defence, ‘you collect bribe you die’,” he warned.
The zonal commander, therefore, called for cooperation and collaboration with other security agencies to ensure that the election is free, fair, credible and secured.
In his remarks, Mr Phillips Ayodele, the NSCDC Commandant in the state, said the corps was collaborating with all the security agencies to ensure hitch-free elections in 2019.
Ayodele commended the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for supporting the programme, saying “We will have more of this sensitisation before the general elections.”
On his part, Prof. James Apam, the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC, described the sensitisation programme, “as very apt and timely”.
Apam, represented by INEC’s Administrative Secretary in the state, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, said: “Ours is to provide a level playing field for all the 91 registered political parties that are participating in 2019 general elections.
“INEC is displeased with the issue of vote buying which is now a new phenomenon from political parties.
This should be put into the domain of the security agencies.
“We call on the relevant security agencies to be up and doing and get intelligence report to ensure that the ugly trend of vote buying is checked.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the representatives of other security agencies, participated in the event, including Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, Department of State Security(DSS), Economic and Financial Crime Commission(EFCC), Independent Corruption and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC).
Others were: National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
