The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Yagba Federal Constituency, Chief Dayo Akande, has strongly condemned the recent attack on Odo-Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, which claimed the life of an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Ayo Olukotun, and led to the abduction of several residents, including the deceased’s daughter.
In a statement issued by his Media office on Tuesday, Akande described the incident as “barbaric, heartbreaking, and unacceptable,” noting that the attack represents a direct assault on the peace and security of Yagba land.
The ADC flagbearer expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Olukotun, whom he described as a dedicated officer who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Ayo Olukotun, the NSCDC, and the entire people of Odo-Ere. His death is a painful loss, not only to his family but to the entire Yagba community and the nation at large,” Akande said.
He also expressed concern over the abduction of the officer’s daughter and other residents during the attack, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing their immediate and safe release.
According to Akande, the growing wave of insecurity across Yagba communities has become alarming and requires urgent intervention from relevant authorities.
“The continuous incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks have left our people living in fear. Farmers can no longer freely access their farmlands, businesses are under threat, and communities are increasingly vulnerable to criminal elements,” he stated.
The politician called on the Kogi State Government to take decisive steps toward addressing the security challenges confronting the area. He urged the government to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve the operational capacity of security agencies, deploy more personnel to vulnerable communities, and support local security initiatives.
Akande stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of government and warned that failure to tackle insecurity could further undermine socio-economic development in the state
“This tragic incident once again highlights the urgent need for a more proactive and effective security architecture across Kogi State. Our people deserve to live without fear and carry out their daily activities in safety,” he added.
He further assured residents of his commitment to advocating policies and initiatives that would enhance security and improve the welfare of security personnel if given the opportunity to represent the constituency.
While urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information, Akande expressed optimism that collective efforts would help curb criminal activities in the region.
He concluded by praying for the repose of the soul of the deceased officer and the safe return of all those abducted during the attack.
