The UN Secretary-General is like the CEO of the united nations overseeing the organization’s day to day operations and representing it globally with the following responsibilities.

Administrative duties
The Secretary-General is responsible for managing UN staff and resources

Diplomacy and mediation
Facilitating discussion among member’s states and accounting as a member in conflicts

Global Advocacy
The secretary -General is responsible for bringing attention to important issues like climate change, human rights and humanitarian crisis.

Representing the UN by attending international events and meeting with world leaders
Reporting by issuing annual report on the UN’s activities and future priorities

The Secretary-General is also expected to uphold the UN’s values and moral Authority even if it means challenging members states

They are appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the security council typically for a five years term.

The role of the UN secretary -General remain relevant till today but it’s effectiveness is being questioned due to the changing global dynamics

The current Secretary-General, Antonio Guterrres, has emphasized the need for reform and a stronger role for the UN in addressing global challenges like climate change ,peace and security. However, some nations are not adhering to the Secretary-General’s words highlighting the need for restructuring.

The UN faces challenges in enforcing its decisions, and some members states are questioning its authority. There are ongoing discussion about reforming the UN and the Secretary-General’s roles.

Ideas like

Strengthening the UN Authority, enhancing the UN’s ability to enforce it’s decisions and hold members states accountable.

Increasing representation by reforming the security council to give more representation to developing countries and ensuring more diverse leadership

Improving transparency by enhancing transparency in decision making processes and increasing accountability

Potential reforms
Expending membership by increasing the member of permanent and non- permanent seats to make the council more representatives with suggestions ranging from 21 to 28 members

Veto reform
This is by limiting or abolishing the veto power held by the five permanent members (P5) or extending it to new permanent members

Regional representation
Strengthening representation from under represented regions like Africa Asia and latin America.
Improving working methods by enhancing transparency, accountability and inclusivity in decision making process

Strengthening the UN general assembly’s role by giving the general assembly more Authority in peace and security matters

G4 nations bid Brazil, Germany,India and Japan seeking permanent seats
African union Ezulwini consensus seeking two permanent seats for Africa with veto power

Uniting for consensus
Opposition of permanent seats are advocating for semi- permanent or long term seats instead
It should be noted that the process is complex requiring approval of two third of UN member states and the P5 with the ongoing discussion and negotiations aim to address these challenges

Clearer roles and responsibilities by defining the roles of various UN bodies and agencies to avoid overlap and improve accountability
Enhanced transparency and oversight strengthening the UN’s auditing and evaluation mechanism to ensure effective resources use
More inclusive decision making there by increasing participation from civil society, NGOs and stakeholders to ensure diverse perspectives
