Engr. Mohammed Ahmadu Bello, a former staff of Power Holding Company of Nigeria plc (PHCN) has called on leaders of the National Assembly to intervene and help former employees of the privatised power company get their entitlements.
In a video shared on his social media platform, Bello stated that he forwarded a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on behalf of over 50,000 staff who lost their jobs when PHCN was privatised.
He noted that while his letter was acknowledged by the President, the leaders of National Assembly ignored it.
An aggrieved Bello issued a seven day ultimatum to the Senate President and Speaker to acknowledge his letter.
“I had on June 24th 2020 written an open letter to Nigeria president and the other two entities. The Nigeria president, President Muhammad Buhari through his media aide noted and acknowledged my letter but the other two authorities did not, they ignored as if they didn’t see it. This is unacceptable in a sane society.
“In the letter, I demanded on behalf of over 50,000 Ex-PHCN Staff that our outstanding emoluments be paid. The government has refused to pay us these entitlements since 2013 that the power sector was privatized.
“As a citizen I have the right to demand for my right, I have the right to hear from my leaders whenever I call unto them. How would a whole Presidency acknowledge my message and yet no single response from the Senate and house of representatives? Do you mean a robot controls your social media accounts and other official channels to mail you?
“Honestly speaking, this isn’t the Nigeria I dreamt of. I dreamt of a better Nigeria and not a Nigeria where the leader turns deaf ear to her citizens. How in a sane society would a poor citizen call on her leader to save his or her life and yet the leader wouldn’t respond? This is not the Nigeria I dream of.
“I demand that the Senate President and Speaker see that the issues in that letter addressed to them and ensure ex-PHCN staff outstanding benefits are settled without any further delay.
“We are dying, so you should without any further delay respond to my mail otherwise am giving you 7 days, (starting from 24th July 2020) to respond to my demand or else I will request that NATURE deduct my dues from the both of you. This is not a threat but a call to do the needful, a call to action, a call to be responsible, a call to duty and a call to save over 50,000 dying ex-PHCN staff souls,” he said.
