Michael Paul Ocheje, a Nigerian born in Canada, has been recommended for the Governor-General’s Medal of Distinction.
The Governor-General’s medal is the country’s highest honour for graduate students of Canadian universities.
In a message of gratitude and thanksgiving to God by Michael’s father, Paul Daniel Ocheje, a Professor of Law at the Windsor University, Ontario, on behalf of the family, he expressed gratitude to God for the feat.
“We are writing to express gratitude for your overwhelming support and goodwill for us and our son, Michael, during the defence/oral examination of his PhD thesis two days ago.
“The examination was a roaring success. Michael very competently defended his thesis before a panel of experts. The result was a pass… He was also recommended for the Governor-General’s Medal of Distinction, the highest honour for graduate students of Canadian universities.
“We appreciate that the goodwill and prayers of our community made a difference. And we are grateful,” he said.
The information also revealed that Michael will proceed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA, for his postdoctoral studies in March.

Reminiscing the journey from a humble community, Oganenigu, in Dekina Local Government of Kogi State, Prof Ocheje said; “It is almost surreal as we reminisce on the twists and turns of our lives, beginning from the little village of Oganenigu. We are grateful for every grace and favour that God has bestowed on us and our family – Paul, Winifred, Michael, Sharon, and Matthew constituting the entirety of the Ocheje clan in Canada.”
