…police command’s attention should shift from demanding vehicles particulars and drivers’ license from motorists to the core responsibility of combating criminals

The leadership of the Kogi State chapter of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, to as a matter of urgency direct its command in Kogi State to live up to its expectation by redoubling their effects in checkmating the activities of criminals.

The Union made the call in a statement made signed by the Chairman, Comrade Ali Atabor and Union Secretary, Comrade Adeiza Momoh.

The union expressed great concern about the rising spate of crimes in the recent week across the length and breadth of Kogi State.

“Only yesterday, two serving magistrates in the Kogi State judiciary were kidnapped at various locations in Kogi East Senatorial district.

“Also auditors working with Kogi State government who were on assignments outside the State Capital were kidnapped along Ajegwu-Idah road. All these activities caught the police and other security agencies napping.

“To make matter worse, the criminal elements a week before attacked Osara police Station where they were alleged to have killed two policemen and went away with arms in the police armoury.

“Some few weeks back, people of Idah town and its environs were enveloped in palpable fear as hoodlum and cultists operated freely even in the broad day light.

“Citizens can no longer sleep with eyes closed and property are stolen and vandalised with no help coming from any quarters.

“It is in light of these that the union calls on the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, to as a matter of urgency direct it’s command in Kogi State to live up to its expectation by redoubling their effects in checkmating these criminal elements.

“The police command’s attention should shift from demanding vehicles particulars and drivers’ license from motorists to the core responsibility of combating criminals who are daily basis unleashing mayhem on innocent and law-abiding citizens.

“The union is utterly concerned and worried over the seeming inability of the police to frontally combat the criminals who always escape unhurt each time commit their heinous crimes against their victims.

The Union called on the State government to as a matter of urgency engage the necessary security apparatus and other stakeholders to bring the rising crime wave to a halt.
