The Kogi State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sulemain Ibrahim Mafara, said the death of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ponyan Ward, Yagba East Local Government Area, Mr. Bunmi David Ipinnaiye occurred in the hospital and not in their cell as widely reported.

Ipinnaiye, on Tuesday, was reported to have committed suicide with belt in NSCDC cell where he was detained.

He was arrested by officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for attempted murder, before his sudden death.

Speaking with newsmen in his office in Lokoja, the Commandant said Ipinnaiye died at ECWA Hospital Ponyan and not at the cell of the NSCDC.

He explained that Mr. Bunmi, aged 42, was arrested by the NSCDC following report that he wanted to behead a young boy who was making advances to his daughter.

Following the report to behead the boy, the Commandant said Mr. Bunmi was arrested on the 7th of June 2022.

He added that the deceased  was arrested with the cutlass in attempt to harass  a young man alleged to be dating his 19 year old daughter and brought to the station.

While he was detained at the counter, the Commandant said they tried to counsel  him in a bid to calm him down when he suddenly asked for a bottle of water.

The Commandant said unknown to the Officer who went to get him the water that Mr. Bunmi had a negative plan, met him gasping for breath.

He said upon the return of the officer, he met Mr. Bunmi who was suspected to have tried to strangulate himself, quickly rushed him to the hospital.

He disclosed that after a while and efforts to stabilize him, the Medical Doctor confirmed Mr. Bunmi dead, allayed fears of his death in the Cell.

The Commandant advised the media to always cross check information with relevant authority before rushing to print.
