Nigerian troops killed two suspected bandits in Kogi State after an ambush along the Adankolo–Apata Road, the military said, in an operation the army described as intelligence-led.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, acting media information officer at the headquarters of Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke, on Saturday, Soldiers of Sector 3 carried out the operation on Oct. 31,

The statement said the troops acted on intelligence about the movement of suspected armed criminals around communities in the Kabba-Bunu and Lokoja local government areas.

Troops set an ambush on what the military described as the suspects’ supply route, the statement said. It said the soldiers made contact with the group, which was “subdued” and forced to flee.

At about 0900 hours the same day, while troops were conducting follow-up operations, they received information that bodies had been found toward Adankolo Forest. On reaching the location, the soldiers found the corpses of two suspected bandits, the statement said. They recovered one locally made pistol, one cartridge and one spent case of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE and General Officer Commanding 5 Division of the Nigerian Army, commended the troops for what he called their gallantry and successful execution of the operation, the statement said.

He urged residents to keep giving security agencies timely and credible information on suspicious activity, saying security “is everybody’s responsibility,” according to the statement.

Gara reiterated the task force’s commitment to intelligence-led operations to protect lives and property across its area of responsibility, it said.
