Grenade Found Beside a Church in Lokoja

The people of Lokoja, Kogi State, on Saturday, were in a state of confusion as a grenade suspected to belonging to the police was discovered near Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke -Isegun at Phase II Estate extension in the state capital.

Operatives of the  State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Police  uncovered the  grenade.

The commander of the state police command’s  Anti-Bomb Unit, Mr. Cletus Nzeji, while addressing journalists, said the police grenade, marked M79AF1, could have fatal effects, if detonated at a close range, adding that it was of the class used to  disperse rioters.

Also speaking,  the state SSS Director, Mike Funbara, who alerted the police to the scene, said the discovery was a result of a tip off from “a good Samaritan.”
Nzeji, who was not specific about how the grenade got to where it was discovered, said that it could have been carried there by the river.

While reiterating that the source of the bomb was traceable, Nzeji said investigation was on to ascertain its source.

Commending his unit for prompt response, he expressed appreciation to the informant who alerted security operatives to the bomb, noting that if such person had kept mum, it could have ended up killing unsuspecting citizens.
