Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Thursday released fund in fulfillment of a promise he made to the people of Adankolo community in Lokoja to complete their abandoned 2000 capacity Community Central Mosque.
The governor redeemed the pledge when he officially presented the financial documents for the completion of the Mosque to a Seven-man Committee, that was set up to handle the project in Lokoja.
Bello, who was represented by Hon. Nda Aaron, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Mobilisation, said the gesture was a fulfillment of a promise he made when he visited the community on July 27, 2017.
It would be recalled that the leaders of Adankolo community had appealed to the governor to help complete the 2000 capacity central Mosque, when the governor flagged off the GYB Model Primary School in the community.
Bello also promised to look at other requests made by the youths of the community in 2017, and give them adequate consideration within the process of time.
He appreciated the people of the community for the warm reception and urged them to continue to support the New Direction Government and keyed into the various empowerment and developmental programmes in the state.
Speaking on his own capacity, Aaron, who is also from the community, said that the community had existed for over 150 years without any tangible impact from all the successive governments in terms of appointments, employments or infrastructure.
According to Aaron, the coming of Gov Bello is a new ray of hope for our community as the governor has appointed people in LGA as well at the ward levels.
He added: “We have never had it so good like this before in the history of Adankolo community in spite having the largest voting population in Lokoja LGA, we have never benefited anything from the past governments.
“But we have been enjoying dividends of democracy under this present Administration; today, we are experiencing community project because one of the GYB Model Primary Schools has been sited here in Adankolo”.
“Being the most senior appointee from this community, the governor has sent me to deliver the financial documents for the completion of the Mosque to the committee and leaders of the community.
“Since it is a public project which belongs to all of us, then the public must be aware of the presentation of the documents to the heads of the community and the committee for completion in the next one month.
“Due to past experience about community projects, the governor has directed that we set up a committee that will handle the completion of the mosque within the shortest possible time.
“The project work is not a thing that can be left in the hand of one or two persons to handle, hence the need for the committee.
“The mosque has their own committee and we have also incorporated an executive member of the APC at ward level, and community youth leader into the committee for proper work,” Aaron said.
In his remarks, the Chief Imam of the Mosque, Alhaji Muhammed Usman, commended the governor for fulfilling his promise, stressing, “he made the pledge and has fulfilled the promise today. We are very grateful to him”.
He prayed that God will be with him, guide and strengthen him in all his doings, promising that his people would reciprocate the gesture by giving him massive votes in 2019.
The Imam also thanked the governor for considering it fit to site a Model Primary School in Adankolo community, saying the history would never forget him.
