People living in flood prone areas of Kogi State have been urged to not only move to higher ground but to also run for their dear lives.
Kogi state Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi made the call following the announcement by the Minister for Water Resources, Serah Ochekpe, that water would be released from Jebba and Kainji Dams.

Awoniyi directed dwellers in flood plains to heed the warning of moving upland as it has been warned that Kogi, Kwara and Niger States would be flooded again following the water that will be released from the dams.

While noting that the devastation caused by last year’s flood was unimaginable, Awoniyi said the best measures that would help to prevent another loss of lives and properties was for people to move upland.

The Deputy Governor called on religious, traditional, community and opinion leaders to help in the call for people to move upland.

While noting that the state government is fully prepared to fight this year’s flood following the preparation it has put in place, it will however require the cooperation of those concerned to heed all warnings made by Government regarding safety.
Similarly, Mrs Alice Ogedengbe, the State Secretary State Emergency Management Agency, has also called on people living in flood prone areas to quickly evacuate people who are vulnerable to higher ground, urged them to harvest their crops before the flood.
Mrs Ogedengbe equally urged the people to cooperate with boat operators who have been trained by her agency in evacuation procedure and who would be working with the affected Local Government in rescue operations so as to help in moving people to places designated as camps
