Cooperative Society Drags Ijumu LG Secretary Over Alleged N21.4m Fraud

The NMC Staff Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society Ltd has called on the Secretary, Ijumu Local Government Council, Hon. Ibikunle Alex Ropo, to refund over 21million Naira he allegedly transferred to his personal account and that of non-members of the body.

The Abuja-based cooperative society caters for the welfare of National Mathematical Centre staff.

According to a member of the cooperative society who spoke with our reporter, Ibikunle abused his office while he held sway in the thrift.

The member, who craved anonymity, said several letters have been sent to Ibikunle after through account reconciliation and investigations. He confirmed that no less than three letters have been sent to Ibikunle to come out clean and notify the cooperative society of his plans to refund the monies he dubiously transferred to himself and cronies.

In one the letters sighted by our reporter, the cooperative society accused Ibikunle of fraudulently paying N16,083,000 into his personal account from the thrift purse.

They also accused the Ijumu local government scribe of fraudulently paying N5,365,000 into bank accounts of non-members of the cooperative society.

In the letter addressed to Ibikunle, the cooperative society lamented that the fraud and his subsequent delay in paying back the monies has caused the body serious embarrassment.

The letter signed by the acting President, Shehu Jibrin and secretary, Darius Alhassan said: “We further re-instate that as at date hereof, you have not deemed it necessary to partly reduce your indebtedness or avail us with the repayment plans of your intention to offset the above sum.

“Your consistent delay, neglect and/or refusal to respond to our various letters to you is causing serious financial embarrassment to the cooperative society.

“We hereby demand from you, immediate settlement of the sum of N21,448,000:00 being money you transferred to your personal accounts and non-members of the society. Note also, that we have not concluded our investigations/reconciliation of the accounts the period covering your tenure. We shall update you as soon as we finalize our reconciliation.

“Your prompt response will be appreciated. You neglect this demand at your peril.”
