Sustaining the present togetherness of Nigeria has been described as a great factor to the development of the nation.

Capt. Idris Wada, Kogi State Governor made the remarks at a boat regatta celebration in Kogi State, one of the activities put together by the state government to mark the 100 years centenary celebration of Nigeria.

The Governor who was represented by his deputy, Yomi Awoniyi, described Kogi State as a melting pot of colonial history, called for greater attention from the federal government for Lokoja as the nation celebrates its one hundred years of existence.

Wada called on the people to strive towards the continuous peace and unity of the nation, and said the nation stands to benefit more socio-economically under the present arrangement.

The governor called for a sustained efforts that will make the boat regatta an annual event, adding that it can serve as a tourist attraction.

The governor assured that tourism will be given prominence in the transformation agenda of the present administration in the state.

In his remarks, Prof Olugbemiro Jegede, Chairman of the Centenary Planning Committee and Secretary to State Government, said the Boat Regatta was part of the centenary celebration aimed at emphasizing and showcasing the symbolic cultural lives of the people that lived along the confluence of the Rivers Niger which greatly inspired the colonialists to be attracted to the Niger area owing to the rich culture of the people.

Prof Jegede disclosed that the present day Lokoja played a very important and significant role in the birth of Nigeria, said the boat regatta was a way of life that has always united the people from time immemorial.

Highlights of the activities marking the centenary boat regatta were speed boat race, display by calabash riders, Duck catch display and Towlu race among others. Prizes were presented to winners at the occasion.
