  • Initiative to connect African leadership, media and diplomacy for continental development

Democracy Newsline Newspaper, published by Michabifem Ventures Limited, Nigeria, is set to launch a continental media diplomacy initiative known as the African Leaders’ Engagement on Media and Development (ALEMD), aimed at strengthening the relationship between African leadership, the media and diplomacy for sustainable continental development.

The initiative, which is being championed by the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Democracy Newsline Newspaper, Chief Olugbemi Femi, is designed to establish a strategic international media platform for engagement with African Presidents, Heads of Government, diplomats, policymakers, business leaders and other influential stakeholders across the continent.

With the theme, “Connecting African Leadership, Media and Diplomacy for Continental Development,” ALEMD seeks to create an avenue for African leaders to showcase their administrations’ achievements, communicate their development policies and share their visions for the future of their respective countries with audiences across the world.

The initiative is also expected to promote constructive discussions on democracy, good governance, economic transformation, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth empowerment, investment opportunities, regional integration and other critical issues affecting Africa.

A major component of ALEMD will be exclusive presidential interviews, through which Democracy Newsline Newspaper intends to engage African Presidents and Heads of Government on their leadership experiences, governance philosophies, policy achievements, national challenges and development priorities.

The interviews will be published and disseminated through the newspaper’s print, online and digital platforms, as well as other international media channels, to give the discussions wider visibility and reach audiences beyond the African continent.

The continental media engagement will also provide opportunities for diplomatic interactions, international media cooperation and discussions on how African countries can strengthen bilateral and multilateral relationships in pursuit of shared development objectives.

Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, Chief Olugbemi Femi explained that ALEMD was conceived out of the need to create a stronger connection between African leadership and the international media while providing a platform for the continent to tell its own development stories.

According to him, Africa has numerous development initiatives, leadership experiences, investment opportunities and success stories that deserve greater international attention and documentation.

He noted that the media has an important responsibility not only to report political developments but also to promote constructive dialogue, encourage accountability, project development opportunities and facilitate communication between governments and the people.

He further explained that ALEMD would seek to engage presidential offices, diplomatic missions, African regional institutions, international development organisations and relevant stakeholders in building a sustainable platform for continental media diplomacy.

The initiative will also explore opportunities for an African Development and Governance Dialogue, an African Leaders’ Media Diplomacy Tour, international media visibility programmes and recognition of outstanding contributions to governance, diplomacy, humanitarian services and continental development.

The Board and Management of Democracy Newsline Newspaper believe that the initiative will create opportunities for African leaders to communicate directly with the international community while encouraging responsible journalism and constructive engagement on issues affecting the continent.

As part of its initial engagements, the organisation plans to reach out to selected African presidential offices to seek approval for exclusive interviews and establish institutional relationships for the implementation of the programme.

Democracy Newsline Newspaper, through its publisher, Chief Olugbemi Femi, expressed optimism that ALEMD would become a sustainable platform for promoting African leadership dialogue, strengthening media diplomacy and projecting the continent’s development aspirations to the global community.

The initiative is expected to extend its engagement beyond Africa by encouraging interactions with international leaders, diplomatic institutions, investors and development partners interested in Africa’s growth and transformation.
