A Viable Journalism Industry, Key To Solving Nigeria’s Problems – Mike Abu

Nigeria will be a better nation and have it problems solved if it places more emphasis and priority on having a viable journalism profession that serves as a watchdog in educating, informing and in entertaining the society.
This was the core of submission made by Abu Michael, publisher of The Nigerian Post Newspaper, in a presentation at the third career day of Anchor International Schools, Lokoja, where he said the nations problems can best be solved using a viable journalism profession.
The Guest Speaker disclosed that countries that values and places tremendous respect on the journalism profession have made hallmarks in their growth and development, socio-economically.
According to Abu Michael, if properly utilized, journalism has the ability to check the excesses of those who govern,  educate and inform the govern on policies, their rights and what is expected of them as roles.
While Abu described the level of ignorance and illiteracy in the country as one that is constantly on the rise, assured that a visble Journalism profession, has the ability to educate, interpret and inform the people, on what is expected of them in a challenged society.
Mr Abu called for the establishment of more media houses by government and private individuals, with adequate emphasis placed on their welfare, pointed out that if enabling environment in the industry,  the sector has the capacity to attract more persons to want to serve as watchdog, in educating informing and entertaining the populace to be responsive and to good government.
The Guest Speaker lamented that for a nation with a population of about 180million Nigerian’s, the number of those practicing the Journalism profession are far in short supply, said through creating and strengthening of the Journalism Industry, it will encourage practitioners, consequently, an improved society.
Abu then appealed to students who are choosing a career, to take to journalism as a way of  helping in the reformation, reorientation and transformation the country is clamour for, towards making it a better nation for all to live in.
In a welcome remarks, Mrs Helen Okpanachi, Proprietress of Anchor International Schools, said most career choice are based on Ignorance and illiteracy on the part of parents and Students, said the career day is aimed at helping stakeholders take meticulous thought, before making devastating mistakes in career choice.
She advised parents to identify areas of strength, passion and gifts  of their children as a way of encouraging and to counsel them on choosing their career paths.

In a career talk, Ameh Stephen Audu said the career guidance day of the school is to enable students have idea about how they go about to earn a living during their working life.

The Guest Speaker added that career guidance also enables the students have the freedom of choice, rather than imposed on them a choice career, warned that choosing a wrong career can affect ones life, job in security, frustration and wrong planning.
