The Special Adviser to Kogi State Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Engr Abubakar Ohere in collaboration with the Ajaokuta Steel Company is set to train 500 Kogi youths on craftsmanship in the GYB Artisans Project (GAP).
Engr Ohere stated this after a meeting with the GAP Project Director, Dr Hussein Etudaiye; Project Coordinator, Alh Abdulateef Ovosi; and the Project Manager, Mr Suberu Onimisi; directing them to visit the Metallurgy Training Centre of the Ajaokuta Steel Company.
The project according to Ohere is coming on the heels of the need to bridge the knowledge gap through craftsmanship, a stride which made it possible for artisans in Benin Republic and Togo to take over jobs in Nigeria.
He said the first batch of 500 youths would be trained intensively for three months on welding, masonry, tilling, plumbing, carpentry and joinery, electrical equipment maintenance and installation, steel fabrication, tool making, steel technology amongst others.
In a swift kick, the GAP team has embarked on a facility tour of the Metallurgy Training Institute with the Administrator of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, Engr Sumaila Abdul Akaaba.
During the tour, Engr Abdul confirmed that the training theater, classes and workshops are in perfect state to host trainees, corroborating the efforts of Engr Ohere on manpower and skill development.
He said graduated artisans will be able to build careers of their own and help in the development of Small and Medium Scale businesses within the state.
He also promised to access from the graduands of the centre as soon as Ajaokuta commences operations.
The training will cut across all the 21 LGAs of the state and will be inaugurated by Gov Yahaya Bello at the old stadium, on the 26th of January, to commemorate the 2nd Anniversary of the New Direction Administration.
