To some lawmakers at Kogi State House of Assembly, the final submission of candidates to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) signaled the end of their membership at least in the next session of the Seventh Legislature of the State Assembly.
By now, reality has dawned on these lawmakers that when the Seventh Legislature is inaugurated for legislative business in June 2019, they will not be returning based on the results of various party primaries across the state.
As at last count, 12 of the 25 serving lawmakers would not be returning for the inability of most of them to secure return tickets of their various political parties.
While some of these lawmakers failed to secure return tickets to the hallow chamber, some voluntarily withdrew from contesting while others opted for other higher elective posts and others contested but failed at the party primaries level.
Those that would not return include; the two former Speakers of the present Sixth Legislature, Rt. Hon. Momoh Jimoh Lawal and Rt. Hon. Umar Ahmed Imam.
Rt. Hon. Jimoh Lawal had his eyes on flying his party, Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Representatives ticket to represent Okene/Ogori-Magongo Federal constituency. As a result, he did not seek to return to the House.
Amongst others that would not return are; Hon. Victor Adewale Omofaiye, member representing Ijumu constituency who initially opted for higher legislative duties to represent Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu federal constituency but withdrew at the early stage before his political party primaries.
Omofaiye later decided to secure a return ticket but voluntarily withdrew from contesting considering the rotational arrangement in his area.
Other lawmakers that would not be returning include the current Deputy Speaker and member representing Dekina/Okura constituency, Hon. Hassan Abdullahi who has secured his party, All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives ticket to contest for Dekina/Bassa federal constituency seat.
Others are; Hon. Haruna Idoko Musa, Idah constituency; Hon. Kekere Sanni Abdulkareem, Okehi constituency; Hon. Aliyu Akuh, Omala constituency and Hon. Oluwatoyin Lawal, Yagba West constituency.
The rest are; Hon. Osiyi Godwin Ojo, Ogori/Magongo constituency; Hon. Obaro A. S. Pedro, Mopamuro constituency; Hon. Adoke Muktar Bello, Adavi constituency and Hon Osewu Muhammed, Kogi/Koton-Karfe constituency.
