Nigerian youths have demanded the implementation of a National Youth Commission, as part of efforts to address the country’s youth development challenges.
The demand was made during the 1st Police National Youth Summit held on Monday in Abuja, where the Convener of the Nigerian Youth Coalition, Aare Oladotun Hassan, presented a joint resolution to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The group disclosed this in a statement after the event.
Hassan said, “We aligned with the Chief Emeka Anyaoku led Patriots Leaders of Thoughts resolutions to demand a Presidential Executive Bill for a new Nigeria pluralistic people’s constitution.”
Hassan emphasised that this new constitution should be achieved through the National Assembly’s establishment of a National Plebiscite and Referendum Commission and National Constitution Management Agency Department under the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
He added, “This should be done via mapping out a Constituent’s Assembly to be jointly coordinated by each of the 36 State’s House of Assemblies and Ward Councillors, 108 and 360 House Representatives Members to be done within 180 days respectively.”
Hassan also demanded the urgent implementation of the National Youth Policy Document, saying, “This is crucial for the development of Nigerian youths.”
Furthermore, he called for the establishment of a National Youth Data Centre for proper demographic monitoring and evaluation of the population of Nigerian youths.
Hassan also demanded the establishment of a National Youth Development Commission at LGA, State, Regional, and Federal levels to achieve optimal delivery of dividends of democracy to all Nigerian youths.
He emphasised, “This commission should also regulate all youth organisations in Nigeria.”
Hassan emphasised, “Our focal point is to establish and build a Robust Synergy with IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s good office as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer and Peacemaker.”
The summit also condemned recent nationwide protests, with Hassan saying, “We have resolved not to join the protest, not out of cowardice but premised on patriotism and love for our country.”
The youths pledged to work with the current administration to achieve optimal delivery of dividends of democracy to all Nigerian youths.
