There is excitement across Lokoja metropolis as construction work progresses rapidly on seven solar-powered boreholes facilitated by Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West in the National Assembly. Contractors have already struck water at several sites, sparking relief and celebration among residents who have long grappled with water scarcity.
The development comes just days after the senator pledged to address the water crisis affecting communities across the local government area. Beneficiaries in the affected areas have reacted with visible joy as drilling teams hit water level at multiple locations simultaneously.
Work is currently ongoing at five key locations: Karaworo Centre Community in Ward B, Yakamata Community in Ward E, Up Anguwan Pawa Community in Ward D, Up Karaworo in Ward C, and Workers Village Community in Ward A.
The project fulfills a commitment Senator Karimi made during a Town Hall Meeting held on Monday, August 24, 2026, in Lokoja. At the meeting, the senator lamented the severity of the water situation in the area, recalling how he had deployed water tankers to ease residents’ hardship throughout the Ramadan period earlier this year.
During that engagement, Senator Karimi promised to facilitate five industrial solar-powered boreholes in the worst-affected communities, secured through a Corporate Social Responsibility intervention by a federal government agency. Sources close to the senator have since disclosed that the number of boreholes has been increased to seven, in a move to extend the project’s reach to more communities.
With this latest intervention, the total number of solar-powered motorised boreholes facilitated by Senator Karimi in Lokoja Local Government Area now stands at 29. This builds on the 22 similar boreholes previously completed and commissioned across the LGA.
Residents in the benefiting communities have expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely and people-oriented. Many were seen celebrating as word spread that contractors had hit water, with several commending the senator for remembering their plight.
Reaffirming his commitment to closing critical infrastructure gaps in Kogi West, Senator Karimi said the project reflects his continued determination to improve the living standards of his constituents and ensure sustainable access to clean water across the senatorial district.
