Upon many years ago, there lived a king who listened only to those who praised him. The King considered his ideologies to be the very best. Anyone who dared to counter his ideologies was considered an enemy. There is no need to finish my story since you can clearly tell what befell the King. Nigeria political landscape is filled with a lot of leaders who have addictive penchant for listening to praise singers. Unfortunately, those praise singers are usually a compendium of close family members and political party affiliates. In other words, whoever does not fit in becomes an enemy.

Several weeks ago, Mr. President travelled out on medical basis. Health related issues are by no means trivial. However, a good number of Nigerians were not happy with the President continuous patronage  of foreign hospitals while the ones at home continue to suffer from instances of incessant  strikes, poor facilities and other salient factors. In response, those from  within the presidency defended their principal as though the president had truly shown a good example via foreign medical tourism. They chose not to mention that a huge chunk of Nigeria’s taxpayer money was earlier earmarked to provide medical services at the Villa.

Shall we talk about Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, the minister for Communication and Digital Economy? While many believed that the many campaigns seeking for his resignation base on his previous sympathetic advocacy for terrorism were incited by some aggrieved telecommunications giants. No sane society will throw away the many reliable and verifiable facts laid to bear against the minister. As it is with the attitudinal pattern of Nigerian political gladiators, they’ve chosen to play blind and even when they pretend  to give a listening ear, they will surely give it an ethnic or political coloration.

In fact, more worrisome is the fact that some set of persons can easily get away with whatever simply because they are under a covering. In simple term, many weeks ago, Prof Jibrin Ibrahim, a senior fellow at the Centre for Development, tweeted: “Danladi Umar, chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal was caught on video physically assaulting a security man at Banex Plaza in Abuja saying the guard was ‘rude’. Then he issues a statement condemning Biafran boys. No decorum, totally unacceptable, he must be sacked”. Ever wondered what happened thereafter? nothing! no apology to Nigerians… The whole episode petered out.

When people condone evil because it was perpetuated by a close relative or friend, they unknowingly set in motion a precedent for anarchy. Needless to say, criticisms are major factors to be absorbed/ if any meaningful progress must be made in any nation. So, if I say today that; APC has failed, it is wrong to begin to say “Oh, he is from the PDP or a collosal enemy”. Those from within the corridors of power should be able to ask the right questuons such as; In what way have we failed? Thereafter, measures should be swiftly taken to correct whatever errors therein.

Sometimes, people make criticisms because they want a new narrative and a better Nigeria for the now and also for the future. Until then, I still think that a lot has gone wrong under this administration.
