The second edition of the Umar Empowerment Foundation yearly football tournament kicked-off on Sunday in Abejukolo stadium, in Omala local government area of Kogi state.
The tournament, organized annually by an APC chieftain who is the founder of the NGO, Hon. Umar Yahaya has tremendously helped in discovering young talents and sponsoring them to the peak of their dream career.
Speaking to journalists in Abejukolo at the kickoff ceremony, Hon. Umar said the event is an avenue for local sports development where talents are hunted.
“My NGO is one that is focused on local sports development, what I term as ‘catching them young’, to make sure the talents discovered is not a waste. To God be the glory, this is the 2nd edition and as usual, trophies and other monetary awards will be given to winners at the end of it all,” Yahaya said.
The philanthropist said his foundation also support the less privileged in form of educational sponsorship and also covers empowerment of youths and women.
So far, the yearly tournament has tremendously promoted the peace and unity of the Omala people and indigene had urged Hon. Yahaya to maintain the tempo.
The highlight of the event was the ceremonial kick by the representative of the Omala council administrator, Mallam Abayi Mohammed.
Twenty one teams are slated to take part in this year’s tournament.
