Requirements/Facilities to start Grasscutter Farming in Nigeria.
1. Grasscutter Cage/Pen: Note that Grasscutters live in colonies. a colony should contain two males and three females or one male, with four females in one grass cutter cage.
Grass cutters can be reared in an IRON , WOODEN , CONCRETE CAGE or even in a VACANT ROOM if you have any space as such in your house
If you have a place to keep them already so then budget for your purchasing power.
-Wooden or iron cage are mostly advisable for beginners so you can easily change your rearing environment in case it’s not favorable to the animals.
But if you start with a concrete cage and it happens that the environment is not good for them then you have no option than to start building another cage.
2. A family of a Grass Cutter is called a colony which is 2 males and 3 females OR 1 male and 4 females. (Total of 5 in number).
-Adult colonies are 7 to 8 months old while
-Weaners are 2 to 3 months old
– How many types of Grasscutter do we have?
There are two main species of grasscutters for commercial purpose, the Long Breed (Thryonomys swinderi- anus)
And the Short Breed (Thryonomys gregorianus). ( There’s nothing like imported or Hybrid Grass Cutters)
3) What does grass cutter eat?
The conventional feeds fed to grass-cutter include cassava tuber, guinea grass, elephant grass and sugar-cane stems, pineapple top, sweet potato, etc.
4) What is the best food of grass cutter?
Feeding grasscutter include;
-Cassava.
-Potato.
-Yam.
-Cassava peels and scraps.
-Yellow corn.
-Tiger nut.
-Sorghum.
-Millet.
-Ugu steam.
-Watermelon

5) How many months does it take a Grasscutter to give birth? And How do I know my Grasscutter is pregnant?
Staying calm at a spot mostly and frequent looks at the lower abdomen and through pregnancy test.
The grasscutter delivers precocious young after 148-152days of gestation that is (5 months) intervals.
6) How many babies can Grasscutter give birth to?
They become sexually active and mature 6-7 months. At this age, they can reproduce and give birth to as high as 4-9 young ones, most times 12 if you are lucky enough.
They can be easily reared or managed, and this made their domestication as an alternative to poaching them in the wild.
Regarding to sickness: Grass cutters hardly fall sick just like goats, so when sick that’s when we can determine what the cause and know what to do related.
Most importantly as a beginner buy your breeding stocks from a reputable farm. ( Get a mentor ) you can Get two or more colonies and learn while practicing.
Grass Cutter farming is more of practical than theory. You can read and learn but practical is most of the work of rearing.
