For clarity purposes on the above subject matter. I was privileged to be physically, hale and heartily present at the hallowed chamber during the plenary of Wednesday, 31 January 2018. In the cause of plenary, the speaker read a letter transmitted from the national assembly seeking Kogi state house of assembly’s stand on the alteration of several sections of the constitution as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment.
Relative to the above, he mentioned the alterations clause by clause and the house voted and yes or no voice vote during which the house resolutions were passed on every subject raised.
However, when the votes got to Local government autonomy, the majority leader observed a point of order on a pending petition by the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Kogi state chapter against local government autonomy and subsequently moved a motion to refer it to the house committee on local government as seconded by the deputy minority leader.
The refer was however not for any hidden agenda save that the general public be invited for an open debate where the NUT too shall be called to justify it’s reason for petition. So, been that there was neither a voting or deliberation session by the lawmakers on the said matter, it is very repugnant and misleading for any media, individual or group to come up with the assumptions that the house turned it down.
It is good enough to always be wary of governance but in doing so, it is far better to have facts and figure before criticisms and eulogises. More so that governance is everybody’s business, it is advisable that we make finding before running into conclusions.
N:B The above narrative is a personal account and not communique for or in the defense of any individual or group.
