Prince Kolawole Mathew: An Epitome Of Good Representation

Honourable (Prince) Kolawole Olushola Matthew is the member representing Kabba/Bunu Constituency in Kogi State House of Assembly. He has availed himself of every opportunity given to promote and protect the interest of the people of Kabba/Bunu State Constituency and has also attracted the presence of the state Government to his constituency. More so, without bias, he has discharged his responsibilities as a state legislator efficiently in sponsoring and supporting laws that will foster the overall growth and development of the state as well as giving effective representation to the people of Kabba/Bunu State Constituency and the State at large.

Despite the political distractions from within and outside his constituency he has took various bold step to stand as a an epitome to good representation.

This article attempts to outline some of the discharged responsibilities in his capacity as a representative of Kabba/Bunu State Constituency. Although this report is not all encompassing but it will only focus on some key developmental stridesp undertaken by the lawmaker.

Legislation.

The primary function of a legislator is legislation; making laws. In a Parliament such as the Kogi State House of Assembly, laws, regulations and resolutions are passed in form of Motions and Bills. These Motions and Bills are brought to the floor of the Assembly by the sponsor and are debated upon; if successful, are passed into law. So far, the member representing Kabba/Bunu State Constituency has sponsored no fewer than four important motions and bills which were duly debated on and acted upon accordingly, such as;

Bills and Motions:

– Motion calling on the State Government to complete all abandoned roads and other infrastructure in Kabba town.

– Matter of urgent public importance on upsurge of kidnapping in Kogi State particularly Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area.

– A bill for a law to provide for road traffic administration and make provisions for road traffic and vehicle inspection in Kogi State and other connected purposes.

– Matter of urgent public importance; motion calling on the state government to come to the aid of Mr. Dare Oluhonmi, a victim of accidental discharge by Nigeria Police.

Representation

Besides making laws, a legislator’s next important job is representing his people. This duty demands that the legislator ensures that all the concerns, problems and challenges of his people are communicated to the government as well as ensuring that democratic dividends get to his people. Beyond giving Kabba/Bunu a strong and vibrant voice in the State House of Assembly, the lawmaker has attracted the needed dividends of democracy to the people of his state constituency through effective representation both in his personal capacity and in collaboration with corporate bodies and various government parastatals and agencies at different levels of government.

On employments, empowerment, scholarships and other assistance, since assuming office, the lawmaker has made concerted efforts to curb youth restiveness in the area by actively engaging many youths in meaningful ventures. Many youths are directly under his employ with basic monthly allowance. In addition, he has also recommended many other youths for employment in various organizations.

In terms of support for education, so far, he has given scholarship to students in different institutions ranging from primary schools to the highest institution of learning. However, his love for education has made him to organize the first ever Kabba/Bunu All Secondary Schools Quiz Competition which created an encouraging and competition environment for our secondary schools. Also, worthy of note is the fact that the lawmaker paid medical bills for many of my constituents. In the area of peace advocacy, he has been having regular dialogue and interface with his constituents which has been instrumental to the current peace and stability the area is enjoying.

Furthermore, as a representative of the people, Hon. (Prince) M.O. Kolawole has been interfacing with his constituents on regular basis in order to feel the pulse of the people and also communicate same to the government. Through these meetings, he has successfully rallied the cooperation of the host communities of the various projects undertaken by the state government in the area.

Moreover, as part of his efforts to ensure that his constituents feel the dividends of democracy he has constructed boreholes across the constituency.

To crown it all, On July 1, 2017 the honorable member deem it fit to empower his constituents in various programs which include:

  • 12 grinding machines
  • 15 hair dryers
  • 100 manual spraying machine
  • 15 sewing machines
  • 10 Electricity generators
  • 3 microwave ovens
  • 2 Desktop computers
  • 6 refrigerators
  • 20 pieces of clippers
  • 5 drilling machines
  • 300 farm tools
  • 9 Tool boxes
  • Countless tools and equipment for construction,

And lots more

Oversight

The oversight duty of the Assembly requires it to ensure checks and balances in the other arms of government. It is through their oversight functions, that lawmakers ensure transparency in government. The Kogi State House of Assembly performs this function through the various House Committees. To this end, shortly after the inauguration of the 6th Assembly in 2015, Hon. Prince M.O Kolawole was elected the Majority Leader of the State Assembly following his antecedents and because his fellow Honorable Members believe so much him.

Conclusion

This landmark achievement after just two years in the state house of assembly has clearly shown that Hon. (Prince) M.O. Kolawole is committed to justify the support the people of Kabba/Bunu State Constituency gave to him. This has also defined him as a Panacea to poor representation. It is also very easy to conclude that he intends to improve upon his current performance through the feedback mechanism established by his office and his availability in various social platforms which has makes him very accessible.
