In the twilight of the Captain Idris Wada – led Peoples Democratic Party administration, Kogites lamented that they had never had it that bad. The challenges confronting us appeared insurmountable. There is pervasive corruption that threatened to sweep away the entire state. Fulani’s herdsmen were having a field day in Kogi East, precisely Idah, Ofu, Ibaji and Igalamela LGA, declaring their own republic within the Federal Republic of Nigeria and annexing towns and villages while the government looked helpless.
There is massive increase in crime rates, massive unemployment and the energy sector is in comatose with unending and seemingly impossible power shortages. The government not responding to an economic emergency that has left many families struggling or unable to feed.
The generality of Kogites, with the exception of those who were directly benefitting from the government of the day were totally disillusioned. We cried buckets of tears, changed and yearned for the messiah that would restored sanity in the land.
We cried sea of tears when we heard Yahaya Bello wants to fight corruption, some of us are praying that he should equally fight hunger. The pensioners, workers, landlords are crying, tenants are lamenting and not in their right frame of minds. Many students are being rusticated from various institutions because they can’t pay school fees. Proprietors are distressed. Patronage has dropped badly and some institutions are winding up. The economic is hard.
Kogites are now saying that what they are experiencing now is not the CHANGE they bargained for, and the government has abandoned them in the wilderness to die of hunger and misery. I sought the views of many Kogites at the time of filing this report and their common saying is that Bello CHANGE has not brought the expected change but gloom.
