The supreme garrison mentality of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi state for the past few months has no doubt summarily grounded the sociopolitical and economic activities of the state given the near moribund status of the majority of our public institutions responsible for day to day running of the government activities.
However, with the already complicated situation in Kogi state university following his authoritative display of dictatorial tendencies by proscribing labour activities, an act which is akin to the draconian disposition of the military era, clearly portrays a man with absolutely no sympathy for the students and indeed a man lacking any sense of respect for the academic community.
Furthermore, the mediocrity of his arsenal of appointees who are mere portfolio cabinet members without any clearly defined schedules or responsibilities but keep smiling to bank every month at the expense of the civil servants who have served the state meritoriously for years but are yet to be considered eligible for their salaries is a pointer to the fact that the state needs God’s intervention.
The state assembly, which is charged with the constitutional responsibility of checkmating the executive, has compromisingly submitted its independence to Governor Bello who now dictates the tunes of the music the assembly dances to. When the state assembly, which is the hope of the masses, decides to align with the governor who has no love for the people, then we are finished.
He now has his “YES SIR” boy in Hon. Kolawole as the Speaker who is ready to do the bidding of the governor for his own personal gain rather than protecting the interest of the constituents that voted him.
The governor is more concentrated on creating a formidable structure for his return to Lugard House. The almighty Edward Onoja is busy scheming on how to win election to the National Assembly, the state assembly members are busy filling pockets while the appointees are just moving around and praising the governor for lack of job schedules.
Now tell me, can the state survive this incompetence and mediocrity? Please pray for Kogi state.
