The President, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Oladele Nihi has commended lawmakers of the 9th National Assembly for reintroducing the Peace Corp Bill on the floor of the House.

The Bill titled ‘Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill, 2019 HB 17’, being sponsored by a ranking lawmaker, Hon. Mohammed Tahir Monguno, passed the first reading on Wednesday during the house plenary.

Nihi made the comments in Abuja today Saturday 6th July, 2019 during the inauguration of Directorates of the National Youth Council of Nigeria.

He stressed that it was indeed important as the President of Nigerian Youths who are the direct beneficiary of the bill when passed and signed to law to praise the Lawmakers’ efforts for reintroduce the bill.

“The Peace Corps Bill is one which, when signed into law, possesses the capacity to accommodate thousands of the unemployed youths in the country.

“The Bill will also complement the efforts of other security agencies in the fight against crime and insecurity which the Buhari government is very serious about.

“It is on this note that we call on the Lawmakers to fast track the legislative processes that will bring this dream to the limelight.

“However, let me commend the 9th Assembly for embracing the spirit of continuity. We hope that our confidence in the 9th Assembly remain firm, strong and unshakable.

Both the House and the Senate, had in 2016, passed the Nigerian Peace Corps Establishment Bill 2016 but President Muhammad Buhari declined assent to the Bill, citing paucity of funds and duplication of functions of other security agencies as the main reasons.

The President’s decline of assent, however, elicited a lot of reactions from the lawmakers and members of the public, who felt it was an avenue for the Federal Government to empower the youth and graduates in the country.
