The Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada has said there has not been any reported case of maternal mortality in seven Local Government Areas of the state since 2009.

Wada stated this in his address on the occasion of the showcasing of SURE-P MCH Programme at a two-day capacity building of Nursing/Midwives and CHEWS organised by the Kogi State Ministry of Health as part of activities to mark the 2014 Safe-motherhood Day.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Yomi Awoniyi, described as commendable the statistics, saying the state is on the verge of achieving the MDGs 4 and 5 goals by 2015.

Wada noted that the achievements by the state was attributed to timely detection, intervention, quality management and referral of cases to secondary and tertiary health facilities in the state as well as prompt payment of the midwives and CHEWS allowances and provision of funds for supportive supervision of their activities by the government.

He disclosed that his administration is committed to the eradication of maternal mortality and new born morbidity in the state, while assuring that every step necessary to assist in achieving the goals of the programme will be pursued.

Towards fast-tracking the realisation of the state government objectives, the governor explained that the government will focus more on building capacity on life-saving drugs in the prevention and treatment of post-partum haemorrhage.

He called on women in the state to imbibe the culture of using the midwives service scheme provided in primary health care facilities across the state to make the reduction in maternal and child mortality a thing of the past in the state.

In his speech, the Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Idris Omede said the success recorded by the state in the MSS was derived from prompt referral of cases to the secondary health care facilities and effective supervision and monitoring. Dr. Omede said the focus of the midwives scheme is on the antenatal care for pregnant women, child welfare services, hospital delivery and immunization.

He listed other areas of focus to include emergency obstetric care, prompt referral of complicated cases and post-natal services. The commissioner called for community participation to enhance the well-being of pregnant women and children under-five years so as to enhance safe motherhood in the state.
