Lawmaker Decries Killings in Ebiraland

Member representing Okene I State constituency in Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Lawi AT Ahmed has expressed concerns over the incessant killing of innocent civilians in Ebiraland.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Comrade Lukman Danfulani, Lawi demanded for community policing, particularly areas not adequately policed by security agencies as part of the measures to check the ugly trend.
It will be recalled that in less than one month, not fewer than eight persons including three security personnel have been killed by unknown gunmen in Kogi Central axis of the state.
The lawmaker condemned the killings, particularly the recent unprovoked killing of Ozuwaya community chairman Mallam Yakubu Abdulmumin, who was also the chairman of Non-Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (NASU).
Hon. Lawi urged the government and security agencies in the state not to leave out communities in fashioning out effective strategies to bring about lasting solution, saying that all critical stakeholders should be involved, including community structures, retired military men and other security personnel.
“There is need to mark out the most vulnerable spots and ensure regular and effective patrolling by well-armed and equipped security personnel, fitted with up to date communication gadgets.
“The role of our traditional rulers and institution should be spelt out in the Constitution to enable our traditional rulers play more effective roles in their domains. In addition, the issue of community policing should be acted upon.
“A more robust and effective vigilance group should be formally established to assist and complement the security agencies by bridging important gaps by way of critical information gathering and locating hideouts of criminals. Communities should be able to identify strangers in their environment and monitor activities of all. Government should support community vigilantes with monthly stipends and necessary working tools, especially those on night duty.
“I also use this medium to call on all social groups in Ebiraland to work in close relationship with government and security agencies to come up with lasting solution to ensure the effectiveness of vigilantes in our communities,” he said.
