On the 14th of September, Nigeria’s diplomatic community and countless individuals whose lives he has touched pause to celebrate a man whose career has become a quiet masterclass in duty, discipline, and decency: His Excellency, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, as he marks his 65th birthday.
To describe Ambassador Enikanolaiye merely as a diplomat would be to undersell a life spent building people and institutions in equal measure. He is, in every sense of the word, a distinguished diplomat, an erudite scholar, a community leader, and above all, a builder — of careers, of confidence, and of the quiet, unglamorous scaffolding that holds institutions together long after the applause has faded.
His journey through Nigeria’s Foreign Service reads like a study in patient excellence. From his early years as a young officer in the Ministry, through postings that took him across continents, to his eventual rise as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — the highest administrative office in the Ministry — Ambassador Enikanolaiye has never simply occupied a role; he has elevated it. He went on to lend his experience to the National Defence College, shaping a generation of senior military and civilian leaders in strategic thought, before answering the call to serve as Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, and now as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
But titles, however impressive, only tell half the story. Those who have worked closely with him speak of something less easily captured in an official biography: a willingness to give his shoulder for others to lean on, his wisdom for others to draw from, and his support whenever it has mattered most. In a public service culture where power can so easily curdle into distance, Ambassador Enikanolaiye has remained remarkably, almost stubbornly, human — generous with his time, gentle with his authority, and consistent in his kindness.
It is this rare combination — sharp intellect paired with genuine humility — that has made him not just a respected diplomat but a mentor and father figure to many. He has understood, in a way not every leader does, that true leadership is measured less by the offices one holds and more by the number of lives one lifts along the way. His contributions to scholarship, to community development, and to the quiet mentorship of younger diplomats and public servants are a testament to a man who has always seen leadership as an act of service rather than a claim to status.
As Nigeria continues to navigate a complex and shifting global order — from strengthening ties with strategic partners to addressing shared security challenges across the Gulf of Guinea and the Lake Chad Basin — the nation needs precisely the kind of steady, experienced hand that Ambassador Enikanolaiye brings to the table. His decades of institutional memory are not relics of the past; they are assets actively shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic future.
Today, as he turns 65, it is fitting that we do more than simply mark the passage of years. We celebrate a legacy still very much in motion. We celebrate a man whose excellence has never come at the expense of his warmth, and whose success has never dimmed his generosity of spirit.
