Hundreds of women, on Monday, staged a peaceful march across major streets in Lokoja, Kogi state capital, calling for gender balance in the forthcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections into state and national assemblies.

The women called on Governor Yahaya Bello and the party to concede Kogi West senate ticket to the only female aspirant, Mrs Adedoyin Ibikunle Eshanumi.

Addressing journalists at the NUJ press centre, leader of the group, Mrs. Aisha Kasim, said they want their gender represented in the senate.

Aisha stated that since Mrs Eshanumi is the only female senatorial aspirant in APC, it will be a great achievement for the Governor and party to concede the ticket to her.

Also, Mrs Oremisi Oluwatosin appealed to Governor Yahaya Bello to redeem his promise of ensuring that women are also elected into legislative houses.

Oluwatosin, who commended the Governor for his unprecedented gender inclusion policy, expressed optimism that the yearning of the women to have one of them elected into the Senate will be actualised.

She explained that already a patriotic, educated, committed and committed woman, Mrs Ibikunle Eshanumi from Yagba East LGA is very much in the race to represent Kogi West in the senate.

According to Oluwatosin, women in the state have contributed to the enthronement of the male counterparts to various elective positions and therefore nothing should be wrong if a woman is elected in to the Senate.

She appealed to APC delegates from Kogi West to please consider Mrs Adedoyin Ibikunle Eshanumi to be the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress.

“I appeal to our dear delegates from Kogi West to consider our mother, Mrs Adedoyin Ibikunle Eshanumi, a woman of substance who has contributed immensely to the development of the community, very hardworking and dedicated to the upliftment of the lives of ordinary persons.”

Several women who also spoke during their interaction with the press glowingly praised Governor Yahaya Bello over his gender friendliness, especially the election of women as Local Government Council Vice Chairmen and Council leaders.

They appealed to the general public and politicians to come to the aid of the women folk by persuading the delegates to see reasons why women should be given the chance.
