Kogi Government on Wednesday embarked on monitoring of students’ resumption and validation of data in primary and secondary schools across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.
The State’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, disclosed at a meeting she held with the State Monitoring Evaluators (SMEs) in Lokoja.
According to Osikoya, the monitoring exercise of resumption for the Third Term 2017/2018 Academic Session, would last for two weeks and covers all private and public schools across the state
“The ministry is monitoring the students’ resumption in our schools, and we are also verifying schools and validating the available data such as staff nominal roll, students’ population, school census, external examination, among others.
“Verification in terms of the school licenses, validate those schools that have licenses to conduct external examinations such as NECO, WAEC and NABTEB, to ascertain schools that are operating illegally without authorization.
“Again, the resumption is critical because it will help us to reconfirm the population of students that will be writing the state examination (primary and JSS).
“We want to know schools that have not been responsive; our record shows that about 1000 schools majorly private schools did not take part in the annual census, which is giving us lots of concern.
“All schools will be visited under two weeks and our target is 100 per cent coverage of all the schools in the state, either licensed or not,” Osikoya said.
The commissioner said that some schools had already requested for licensing, saying the ministry would validating their request to reconfirm independently those schools and their facilities.
She added that the validation would also help to partnering with stakeholders for reassessment in the entire sector, saying “the state exam is going to be standard and will cover all the curriculum”.
Mr Ibrahim Zakari, the Director, Quality Assurance of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, who spoke on behalf of the state monitors assured the commissioner that they would do their best to get effective results.
He added: “we are very hard working people, we will not disappoint the ministry and the state government, we shall deliver on the set target”.
