The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Kogi State has ordered drivers to remove any extra headlights on their vehicles or face prosecution.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in the State, Mr Godwin Omiko, while speaking with newsmen in Lokoja, the state capital said that the order became necessary in order to improve the visibility of drivers especially in the nights. Vehicle owners were also directed to affix reflective tapes on their vehicles.
According to Omiko, the use of extra lights at night has been found to be responsible for the increase in night fatalities. He therefore said that the FRSC will not be lenient with any motorist who violates the order.
Speaking further, Omiko disclosed that “ember months” campaign embarked on by the corps recently, was yielding results. he said it will run till January 2015.
He said that the command had achieved over 15 percent reduction in the number of vehicle crashes but that the fatality rate had increased.
“From our records, 222 vehicle crashes, 264 deaths and 959 injuries were recorded from January to October as against 465 crashes, 256 deaths and 1,545 injuries in 2013.
“This represents 52 percent reduction in number of crashes, 3.1 per cent increase in fatality and 38 per cent reduction in number of the injured,” Omiko was quoted as saying by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). This development, he said, was in line with the 2014 target of the FRSC.
