Controversy has continued to trial the continuous stay in office of the present executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State.
The issue our correspondent learnt, has resulted in series of petitions to the national chairman of the party, Ahmadu Adamu Muazu, who has been called upon to intervene in the matter by dissolving the exco of the party in the state to pave way for a new one to be elected.
The legitimacy of the Hassan Salau-led executive of the party in Kogi, our correspondent learnt, became an issue since October, when many party stalwarts began to raise issues about alleged plot by the executive to perpetuate itself in office beyond November, when its tenure was supposed to have lapsed.
One of the petitions which came from some concerned PDP stakeholders was signed by Mr. Ebenezer Majebi, stating the position of the current exco of the party and why it should be dissolved.
“Following the directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the PDP to conduct repeat congresses in some states where such elections had been inconclusive, the PDP organised state congress elections on 9th December, 2010 under the watch and supervision of a 6-man monitoring team nominated by INEC led by Alhaji Ahmed Bimbo Bagudu.
“All that the 29 men and women in that Salau-led Exco are doing is to frustrate and scupper every effort towards bringing them to submit themselves to the hard lessons of constitutional democracy,” the petitioners said.
Another petition signed by Alhaji Ibrahim Suleiman and Andrew Enebe, for Kogi State Concerned PDP Stakeholders, said the present state executive led by Hassan Salawu had completed its four year-tenure having being put in place in November, 2009.
The Kogi State PDP chairman could not be reached as his phone was said not to be available, but his special assistant on media, Ibrahim Adamu, denied the tenure of the chairman has expired.
He said the tenure of the chairman will expire on December 9, 2014 because the first election that produced him was cancelled and that another election which he also won was conducted under the supervision of INEC and officials from the national secretariat.
He added that judging by that valid election his tenure will expire December, 9,2014.
