Kogi Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), on Thursday, embarked on a one-day sensitization mission on drainage maintenance to communities around Total Petrol Station, Iruvucheba, at Agassa junction and Ahogede in Okene LGA.
Delivering a short speech at the sensitization mission, the Project Coordinator, Barr. Ladi Ahmed Jatto, admonished the affected communities to properly manage any form of waste being generated in the communities, whilst also discouraging them from dumping solid waste matter into drains, as it could block the drains and bring about flooding, and ultimately, erosion.
She reminded them that waste, if not properly managed, would certainly come back and waste them.
She encouraged the people to make judicious use of communal waste bins, which have been made available for the purpose of timely evacuation of waste to approved dump sites.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs. Hannah Odiyo, who is the Permanent Secretary, MENR, encouraged the people to have a maintenance culture, as this is the only way to encourage the State and NEWMAP to do more.
On his part, the Administrator of Okene LGA, Engr. Abdulrazaq Muhammed thanked the State Government and Kogi NEWMAP for the sensitization mission, whilst also assuring that waste management would be given the much needed boost in the Local Government.
