Emmanuel Egwu: Political Power is Not Constant

It is the popular saying that “power corrupt absolute power corrupt absolutely”. This is a made reference to political power without discrimination of whether in democracy or in military. This is why Abraham Lincoln once remarked that “nearly all men can stand adversity,  if you want to test a man’s character try and give him power”. This has become increasingly true to political life of many states.

The saying that power though a necessity is an evil further confirmed the corrupt nature of it especially when held by corrupt people.  This evidence confirms that since power is given, its taken is guaranteed and inevitable when abused. By this,  it is no longer hypothesis to hold that power is not constant.

In Nigeria political system leaders who are made by the people are always afraid of the same people because of their betrayal of bestowed trust. Hence as they relegated into their shells, they use power arbitrary against the people.

Our inefficient democratic tenants it is  argued pave ways to unmerited personalities to figure in prominently. In Kogi politics,  it seems the bunch of ill-fortune political drama in Nigeria are “Kogi-Made”. That is why the circumstances leading to the incumbent government of Kogi State is subject to an unresolved political and legal debates. In fact, many have held that the inability to proofer solutions through these arguments is responsible for the reason why the current Governor Yahaya has been abusing power.

In Idah Federal Constituency, it is not a mistaken belief to hold that the representative from the constituency in person of Hon. Emmanuel Egwu has fallen into the class of political power abusers. As the safeguard of the people given mandate, his role politically is to hold that in trust of the people. However, his failure to represent the people has been subjected to constructive criticism while in defiance, the said representative in retaliation has chosen the incarceration of his critics.

Criticism it is said is of benefits to the people in power rather than the critics themselves. Obviously this could not be in doubt. But why do some leaders consider critics as militants?  Perhaps it is due to their blameworthy minds.

The classic instance at hand is the arrest of Engr. Kebiru (KB) whom on his personal conviction of the person of Egwu expressed his profound disappointment and the failure of Egwu’s representation but got arrested and detained. The arrest and continuous detention of KB is a slap on the Youths of Idah Federal Constituency. This calls for the Youths of the constituency to stand up in defence of their jealously guarded freedom.

It is equally disappointing that some Youths on blind loyalty have seen nothing wrong in the aberrant behaviour of Egwu. But for the concerned and well meaning Youths, the task is to call out to get back the one of us. KB belongs to the same political party which flagged Egwu and from the same Constituency with him. Tyranny would not be considered an option for Idah Federal Constituency this time around.

Among other realisations is that Youths of Idah Federal Constituency should be able to make realistic choice of Youth and responsible leadership in the forthcoming general election. As vanguard of freedom, the Youths of Idah will continue to call for democratic and accountability in governance. Only on this could KB be freed and Idah Federal Constituency too.
