The Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Prince Matthew Kolawole has congratulated Muslims all over the world and particularly Nigeria, over the successful completion of fasting in the month of Ramadan.
The Speaker said fasting is an act of voluntary abstinence from food and other activities for spiritual growth which is good for the body and the soul.
He noted that all Nigerians need to show more commitment towards nation building by sacrificing our personal interest to that of the nation in order to move the country forward.
He said despite the fact that the fasting period has come to an end, the lessons learnt during the period should be the foundation upon which to build our country as we move into elections season.
The Speaker admonished Nigerians to be always ready to contribute their quota for the overall development of the country in general and Kogi State in particular.
He enjoined them to continue to maintain peace and avoid utterances and actions that can cause disharmony among the people.
According to him, Ramadan is the period to share in love, move closer to God to maintain cordial relationship with one’s creator even as we celebrate the Eid-l-Fitri in commemoration of the end of the Ramadan fasting period.
He urged Muslims and indeed Nigerians not to abandon all the teachings and virtues they have learnt and imbibed during the period.
According to him, the Ramadan period served as a moment of sober reflection, “the period we collectively decided to abandon vices and embrace virtues. The vital lesson for us therefore is to maintain those virtues which are ingredients of a just society.
“We should continue to be our brother’s keeper, share love among ourselves, continue the act of giving imbibed during the fasting period and avoid utterances and actions that can cause disaffection and disharmony among ourselves”.
The Speaker urged Nigerians particularly Muslims to celebrate in an atmosphere devoid of hatred, violence and chaos.
He commended President Muhammad Buhari for his commitment to promoting democratic values as demonstrated recently in honouring late MKO Abiola, the winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election with the national honor of GCFR and the official recognition of the said date as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and the signing of Not Too Young To Run and Autonomy for state Legislature and Judiciary bills to laws.
He also commended Governor Yahaya Bello for his monumental contributions to the overall development of Kogi State, promising to continue to partner with the executive to move the state forward.
